How to Choose a Domain

Topics Discussed

1. Naming Considerations
2. Which TLD?
3. Multiple Domains

Multiple Domains
Some organizations register multiple domain names, usually variations of their organization name, and have them all point to the same web site. Coke for example has both coke.com and cocacola.com both pointing to the same site. The benefit of doing this is more “Direct Request” traffic, i.e. website visitors who just type your domain into the address field rather than following a link. It may also be in your interest to register multiple domains if you have changed your organization name in the past.

Some organizations register multiple extensions for the same name. For example you might want to register the “.com”, “.net” and “.cc” for your domain. This tactic will not only result in more traffic but will also prevent other people from registering these domains.
